10 Quick & Fun Facts About Singapore

Hello everyone, I’ve decided to share a little more about my country with you guys and I hope you find these facts fun, if you don’t already know them! 😛

1. IT IS ALWAYS SUPER HOT

There is no four seasons in Singapore. It is always summer because it is located in the tropical zone near the equator. While I do love summer a lot, Singapore can get really hot and humid and most people find it unbearable without air conditioning. The average temperature is about 29 or 30 degrees celcius.

2. IT IS SUPER CLEAN… therefore BANS CHEWING GUMS

Known as the Green City, Singapore is extremely clean. You can find rubbish bins every where and you’ll get fined for littering. The fine is not cheap… so don’t even try. To maintain its cleanliness, sales of chewing gums are banned (you cannot find them anywhere in Singapore). However, you can bring gums in from other countries (just not in excessive amounts) and remember to dispose them properly in rubbish bins.

3. IT IS REALLY SMALL

Singapore is a very small country, so small that Singapore is the capital and is the only city in the country. To drive from the west to the east takes only about 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Yes, that’s how small it is but if you live in the West for instance, you will tend to think of the East as ‘not a part of Singapore’ cause it’s still too far away.

4. IT HAS A UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

Unbelievable right? USS (Universal Studios Singapore) is relatively new and it is located in Sentosa Island – a place you must visit when you go to Singapore!!! The ticket costs about SGD70 per adult and sometimes the queue may get quite long but I think it is still a hot spot for tourists.

5. IT HAS A GIGANTIC INDOOR GARDEN WITH MAN MADE WATERFALL

Because of its size and location, Singapore is not one bit geographically blessed. It doesn’t have beautiful natural features like waterfalls or mountains but it is creative enough to build man made ones. Due to the hot weather, Singapore decided to create a garden indoors with air conditioning and you’ll truly come to appreciate it when you’re dying from the heat and humidity outside. This area is known as Gardens By The Bay. At night, there will also be light shows outdoor.

6. IT HAS A LOT OF GOOD FOOD

When you visit Singapore, you must visit at least one Hawker Centre (local food courts) where they sell a variety of Singapore food that you’ll love. I recommend Newton Hawker Centre as it has the most variety and is most popular among tourists. It used to be quite cheap but I think things have gotten pretty expensive now… though I would say it is still affordable.

Some of the things you must try (not an exclusive list):

  • Chicken Rice
  • Fried Carrot Cake (it’s not a cake)
  • Nasi Lemak
  • Roti Prata
  • Fishball Noodles (known in Singapore as Bak Chor Mee)
  • Prawn Mee
  • Wanton Mee
  • Kway Chap

Literally top half lion, bottom half mermaid and it sprays water – really it just looks like us when we’re drunk and vomiting.

8. ITS WATERFRONT PROMENADE WALK IS BEAUTIFUL

This area is called Marina Bay Sands (MBS) – where you can shop for top luxury brands, stay in a 5 star hotel, go to the casino, enjoy free water/fountain shows at night, look at the city’s business district skyline and take romantic strolls along the river. It is my favourite place in Singapore. The walk along the river is fairly long and it will be most beautiful at night. In addition, you’ll find that we have a very unique lotus shaped museum known as the Art Science Museum.

9. CITIZENS & PERMANENT RESIDENTS HAVE TO PAY TO GO INSIDE CASINOS

Singapore has two casinos – one in Sentosa, and the other in MBS. The government decided that in order to deter its own citizens/residents from becoming addicted to gambling, it places a levy fee of SGD100 per entry per day. Of course, as a tourist, the casinos are free so it would be nice to just poke around a bit.

10. CHANGI AIRPORT IS THE BEST

Our airport is the BEST in the world. It currently has three terminals but it is expanding. The airport is big and modern.  Terminal 3 is amazing. Its interior design, shops and entertainments – you will have a hard time leaving the airport. There is free wifi and it is fully air conditioned. It is just the place to be when you get off the plane.
